Preventing Skin Cancer Print E-mail
Australia has one of the highest incidences of skin cancer anywhere in the world. Combining a significant population base living on the coast, a traditional outdoor culture coupled with intense sun has proven to be a deadly combination. There are however some still steps you can take to protect yourself and your family from this potentially lethal cocktail especially when doing exercise.

SunSmart UV alert

The SunSmart UV Alert is reported daily in the weather section of newspapers and on the Bureau of Meteorology’s website. Click on the weather websties and follow the links to the UV Index page.

SunSmart UV Alert identifies the times at which during the day when sun protection will be required.

Protect your skin

For best protection follow the simple five step approach to sun protection:
1. SLIP on some sun-protective clothing and cover as much skin as possible.
2. SLOP on a water resistant, broad spectrum SPF30+ sunscreen 20-30 minutes before heading outdoors and reapply every two hours thereafter.
3. SLAP on a broad rim hat that shades your face, ears, neck, head and eye.
4. SEEK shade cover whenever possible.
5. SLIDE on a pair of sunglasses that meet Australian Standards to protect your eyes.

Additionally, where possible avoid sun exposure when UV levels peak – 10am-3pm daily.

Applying sunscreen

Most people don’t apply enough sunscreen resulting in only partial protection.
Use a broad spectrum SPF30+ sunscreen liberally – at least a teaspoon for each of your limbs, the front and back of your body and half a teaspoon for your face, neck and ears.
